What do car seat groups 0 1 2 3 refer to?

Car seats need to be certified before they can be put onto the market. There are two different standards for these certifications: R44 and R129. The car seat needs to be certified according to one of these two standards.

The ECE R44/04 Regulation (European Standard) classifies car seats into 5 different groups — 0, 0+, 1, 2 or 3 — based on the weight of the child.

  • group 0: carrycots and some car seats, up to 10 kg;
  • group 0+: rear-facing seats for newborns, up to 13 kg;
  • group 1: from 9 to 18 kg
  • group 2: from 15 to 25 kg
  • group 3: from 22 to 36 kg

Some car seats can be included in several groups at once. In these cases, we would refer to group 0/1, group 1/2/3, etc.

The R129 (i-size) Regula&on classifies the car seats based on the size of the child.

How do you attach the car seat?

Studies have shown that 2 out of 3 children are not safely secured in the car. Regardless of the length of the trip, not using a car seat, or using it incorrectly, can have serious consequences in case of an accident. It is essential to use a car seat when travelling with your child, making sure it is well-suited to the child’s morphology and correctly installed inside the car. Children who are less than 15 months old must be seated with their back facing the road. Generally speaking, rear-facing seating is safer than forward-facing. This position should therefore be used for as long as possible.

The car seat can be placed in either the back seat of the car, or the front seat, in which case it is essential to deactivate the airbag.
To install the car seat correctly, first read the instructions completely. With all of our car seat rentals, we provide video tutorials explaining how to install the seat. Be sure to take the &me to watch this video.

There are two types of systems used to install a car seat in your car: the seatbelt or Isofix connectors.

Seats that are attached using the seatbelt are placed directly on the seat of the car, and have slots for the seatbelt to be placed through. On most models, these are a different colour. It is important to note that none of these slots are superfluous: the seatbelt must be placed through each of them. Generally, a sticker on the exterior of the car seat indicates how the seatbelt should be placed through the slots.

The Isofix system is a car seat installation system, common to all recent cars, that allows the car seat to be clipped directly into the car. In general, for car seats in groups 0, 0+ and 1, a base structure is attached to anchor points in the car using the Isofix system. The car seat itself can then be easily clipped and unclipped to this base. Car seats for larger children can be connected to the Isofix system directly, without the use of an additional base structure.
Some seats, such as the “Protect” by the brand Mountain Buggy or the "Doona", can be secured either with the seatbelt or with the Isofix system by using a base.

How do we guarantee that our rental car seats are safe, with no invisible structural faults?

Like seatbelts and motorcycle helmets, a car seat is a safety device — in this case, specifically for children and babies. This is why we’ve implemented a procedure to ensure that these devices are in perfect condition.

Our rental car seats have been selected from reputable brands and have excellent results in crash tests. The exteriors of our car seats are purchased new, to ensure that they are in good condition. Finally, we remove any seats that have been involved in an accident from our rental offer, even if they do not show any visible signs of damage. To do this, all of our seats are equipped with a “shock tracker”, which indicates if the seat has been subject to a shock during the rental period. If it has, the seat is removed from our rental offer and destroyed.

How did we select the car seats in our rental offer?

The car seats that we have available for rent have been selected based on the following criteria:

  • Safety: excellent results in safety tests
  • Quality and comfort
  • Ease of cleaning: as these are rental car seats, it is essential that they can be easily cleaned.
